Designed by Queenstown architectural consultant Graham Roebeck, Beehive won the 2011 Formica Formations competition, and was fabricated by internationally acclaimed designer David Trubridge.
Beehive explores the theme of todays highly portable digital art and media interpreted through the timeless analogy of sculpture as frozen music. The form of the seat is a modern plastic guitar pick spun to form a gourd, which by its size and mass, is rendered immobile. Constructed from Lakepine Zero low emitting MDF, Beehive has beeswax polish to the edges, Formica high pressure laminate to the vertical faces - and weighs 150kg.
